Not that I had much of a horse on last night’s Super Bowl… a few thoughts
1) Judging by the number of Puker fans rubbing it in on my Facebook page, I’ve come to the conclusion that Green Bay fans are the most obnoxious fans in the NFL. At least Oakland fans can dress in costumes and look like WWF rejects once in a while! The most dressed up Packer fans get is when they break out the new Carrharts.
2) The age that seemed to border who thought the Black Eyed Peas were awesome compared to the ones who thought the show sucked seems to be about 28. (Thanks, Mike Henriksen)
3) Xtina, or whatever she calls herself needs to learn the damn words to the anthem.
Actually, that’s my whole point of today’s blog… I’m REALLY sick of people who take the National Anthem and try to make it into a 3 minute “look at me” production. And when you are more concerned about how much you’re trying to impress the crowd and not on the words, you look like an ass…. and in Xtina’s case, sound like an ass too.
And besides, it’s not about “being artistic” or “doing my thang”. It’s about paying respect. It’s about showing your gratitude and thanks to the men and women who have served, fought, and gave up their lives for the past 230+ years so we can have things like the Super Bowl. When you turn the Anthem into your own personal audition tape and an exercise in vocal acrobatics, you disrespect them.
Because, here’s the thing…. IT’S NOT ABOUT YOU!!!!! It’s about paying respect. And if you’re more concerned with style, rather then substance, then move aside and let someone who knows what it’s all about take the mic… let a soldier sing… or a high school chorus… someone who might just give a damn about the meaning of these words….
Oh, say can you see,
By the dawn’s early light?
What so proudly we hail’d
At the Twilight’s last gleaming.
Whose broad stripes and bright stars,
Through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched,
Were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare,
The bombs bursting in air
Gave proof through the night
That our Flag was still there!
Oh, say does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave.
O’er the land of the free, and the home of the brave?
And I didn’t even have to Google the lyrics, either.
