Some interesting developments this last weekend during the Madison/Harrisburg wrestling match. Apparently, Harrisburg used an ineligible wrestler in the 171-pound match. Madison filed a protest, and well…. here’s my story that I wrote on the situation.
A dual loss to Harrisburg last Friday has now become a win for the
Madison wrestling team. In a rare action, the South Dakota High School
Activities Association has overruled Harrisburg’s 41-34 win over
Madison due to using an ineligible wrestler. The situation stems from the 171-pound match, where Harrisburg’s Alex
Oaks won on a 14-2 major decision over Taylor Gusso. But Oaks weighed
a half-pound below the minimum weight to wrestle at 171-pounds which
prompted Madison head coach Chris Waba to file a formal protest. In a release late Monday afternoon, the South Dakota High School
Activities Association sided with Waba’s protest, stating Oaks did not
meet the minimum weight requirement of 154.1 pounds, and could only
wrestle at the 160-pound class. As a result, the 171-pound match was declared a forfeit in favor of
Madison. Harrisburg was stripped of four match points, while Madison
received six match points—giving them the dual win 40-37. Gusso was
awarded the win, but Oaks will not receive either a win or loss for
the match.
Makes for some interesting drama, doesn’t it? Now we’ll if anyone bitches about the rules being “unfair.” To those crybabies, I echo the words of the late, great Mike Stadem… “Check the Rulebook.”
